In Memory Of

Bill Northcraft

William “Bill” Dailey Northcraft, 73, of Cumberland, died Friday, July 6, 2007, at WMHS-Memorial Campus.

Born Aug. 19, 1933, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Mary Maleta Northcraft Turley.

He was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Leroy Pretzel, and a sister-in-law, Frances E. Carroll.

Mr. Northcraft had served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Sum-Fall, Good Conduct Medal, and the Distinguished Unit Citation. He continued to serve in the Reserves, with the 167th Air National Guard, Martinsburg, W.Va., for a total of 22 years of service.

Bill retired in 1997, from Allegheny Power, where he had been a sub-station foreman.

He was a life member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church; Past Master of Potomac Lodge 100, A.F. & A.M.; 32nd degree, Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies; Ali Ghan Shrine, where he belonged to the Past Masters’ Unit; Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2883, Cresaptown; Knobley Mt. Post 136, American Legion, Ridgeley; and U.S. Bowling Congress, where he bowled in the Wednesday Mixed League and the Del Mixed League at The Bowler.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene (Pretzel) Northcraft; four children, William Craig Northcraft and wife Tammey, of Cumberland, William “Brent” Northcraft, of Cumberland, SPC Aaron Scott Northcraft, 82nd Airborne, currently stationed in Iraq, and Alison Nicole Northcraft, of Cumberland, formerly of Concord, N.C.; one grandson, William Craig Northcraft II, of Cumberland; two sisters, Patricia E. Graham and husband Joe, of Cumberland, and Donna D. Goldizen and husband Larry, of Cumberland; Arlene’s siblings, whom Bill considered his family, Robert Pretzel, David Pretzel, and William “Chuck” Pretzel, all of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., Helen Williams Burke, of Cumberland, Onalee Weslow, of LaVale, Darlene Nine and Sheila Seese, both of Bruceton Mills; many nieces and nephews, and a special cousin, who was more like a brother to him, Sandy Northcraft and wife Nita, of Cresaptown.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Officers and members of Potomac Lodge 100, A.F. & A.M., will assemble at the funeral home on Monday for a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John J. Duffus officiating.

Pallbearers will be Tom Keating, William Windle, Sandy Northcraft, Ray Shepherd, Ed Hose and Bill Moody.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dave, Bob and Chuck Pretzel, Ron Nine, Frank Burke, Dave Seese, Joe Graham and Larry Goldizen.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, where military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

Dennis Carpenter

Dennis L. Carpenter (Ridgeley)
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Dennis Lee Carpenter, 55, of Ridgeley, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Born Aug. 23, 1951, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Lee E. Carpenter Jr. and A. Mildred “Millie” (Everett) Carpenter. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jaylyn G. Carpenter.

Dennis was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a very dear friend to many. He was the proud owner and operator of Carp’s Auto on Route 28 in Ridgeley. He was a member of Knobley Mountain Post 136, American Legion, Ridgeley, and an Army veteran NCO. He was very loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Rhoda G. (Lashley) Carpenter; one son, Lee E. Carpenter and wife Joslyn G. Page, Cumberland; two daughters, Joy N. Gillespie and husband Gary, Ridgeley, and Amy M. Reckley and husband Jeremy W., Fort Ashby; one brother, Ronald E. Carpenter and wife Donna, Cumberland; one stepbrother, Robert Carpenter, California; one sister, Linda G. Carpenter, Cumberland; one stepsister, Patty Hughes and husband Eldon, Whittier, Calif.; three grandchildren, Shawn M. Gillespie, Jessica M. Gillespie and Johnny L. Gillespie; and one granddaughter soon to arrive, Gracie K. Reckley.

As per his wishes, Dennis was cremated.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.

The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Cook officiating.

Entombment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Elmer John Kalbaugh 

Ridgeley, WV – Elmer John Kalbaugh, 70, of Ridgeley, WV, died on Friday, February 2, 2007, at his home.

Born June 25, 1936, in Ridgeley, WV, he was the son of the late Elmer Glenwood Kalbaugh and Ruth Louise (Reed) Kalbaugh. Mr. Kalbaugh was also preceded in death by his wife, Rosetta (Carr) Kalbaugh.

Retired from Columbia Gas, Mr. Kalbaugh also served in the United States Army Reserve. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon L. Shelton and her husband, Jerry A., Beverly, WV; as well as three grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Monday, February 5, 2007, from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, February 5, 2007, at 2:00 P.M., with Pastor Tom Landaker officiating

William C. Davis (Fayetteville)
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - William C. Davis, 85, of Fayetteville, died Sunday, March 18, 2007, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2007, at Reeves Funeral Home Chapel in Hope Mills.

Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park West in Fayetteville.

Pallbearers will be the grandsons.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21 at Reeves Funeral Home.

He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was also a former member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion in Ridgeley, W.Va., and a former member of the Good Sam Berets of Fayetteville.

Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Ruth “Louise” Davis; son, Sandy Davis and wife Lynne of Sacramento, Calif., son, Bill Davis and wife Ranae of Richmond, Va.; daughter, Dolly Valentine and husband Jim of Fayetteville; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
